Abyssinian - Ethiopian Horses

Ethiopian horses are those breeds or types of horse found in Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia. There are about 2.8 million horses in Ethiopia, more than half the total in the African continent. Ethiopia reports only the Abyssinian breed to DAD-IS. In 2012 the horses of Ethiopia were characterised into eight distinct breeds or types with different regional distributions, including a gravely-endangered feral population, the Kundudo horse. ContentAdvert Donkeys play vital role in Ethiopian Agriculture directly or indirectly. Over 83% of Ethiopians live in rural areas and make living by small-scale mixed farming. Land cultivation is mainly done by oxen; yet in limited areas such as Jawi, Pawe and southern Tigray it is by donkeys. In some areas of Amhara few farmers use horses to plough land. The Kundudo horse comes from the Kundudo mountain in the Oromia region of Ethiopia and they are the oldest known feral horse population in Africa. They are also the only remaining wild horses in east Africa and they are in danger of extinction. It is said that Emperor Haile Selassie I took his first mount from the Kundudo pack over a century ago. In 2008 an Italian ecologic mission began to research & preserve the breed.
